Table of Contents

Vacuum flanges are indispensable in creating secure connections within vacuum systems, linking pumps, hoses, and chambers with precision. The variety in standards, however, can sometimes lead to confusion. This concise guide demystifies the most prevalent vacuum flange types in the industry, enhancing your understanding and selection process.

ISO-KF (NW) Flange: Efficient Quick-Connect

The ISO-KF flange, notable for its quick-release feature, uses a circular clamp, centering ring, and O-ring to join two flanges securely.

It is available in sizes DN10 to DN50, with KF16, KF25, and KF40 (also known as DN16/25/40 or NW16/25/40) being particularly popular for their compatibility with rotary vane vacuum pumps. These correspond to diameters of 16, 25, and 40 mm, respectively.

The standard hose dimension for KF25 is 25.4 mm in diameter with a 1.65 mm wall thickness.

These flanges are crafted from durable stainless steel, either 304 or 316, ensuring longevity and reliability.

ISO Vacuum Flange: Adaptable and Reliable

The ISO vacuum flange, also known as LF, LFB, or MF, is available in two configurations for versatile applications:

  • ISO-K: This design features double-claw clamps that secure the connection between two single flanges, engaging with a groove on the tubing side.
  • ISO-F: Ideal for applications such as gate valves or wall mounts, this flange type uses a flange, O-ring, and centering ring for its connection and includes holes for bolting.

The ISO 63 is the smallest in this series, fitting a hose with a 50.8 mm diameter and 1.65 mm wall thickness.

JIS VF/VG Flange: Conforming to Japanese Standards

Following the JIS B 2290 standard, JIS VF (Vacuum Flat) and VG (Vacuum Gasket) flanges are key in vacuum distribution pipes and chambers. ‘V’ stands for Vacuum, with ‘F’ indicating a flat interface and ‘G’ a gasketed one, highlighting their specialized use.

CF Vacuum Flange: The Ultra-High Vacuum Choice

For ultra-high vacuum (UHV) applications, the CF (ConFlat) flange is preferred, made from stainless steel (304 or 316) capable of withstanding baking temperatures up to 450°C. Its size range spans from DN10 to DN250, and it achieves sealing through a gasket made from oxygen-free high thermal conductivity copper (OFHC), Viton, or PTFE. It’s important to replace the gasket after disassembly in high vacuum systems to ensure continued sealing effectiveness.

In addition to the above, it’s crucial to highlight the importance of material compatibility and sealing requirements specific to each application, which I inadvertently omitted earlier. This aspect ensures the longevity and reliability of the vacuum system, making the selection of the right flange type even more critical.

Armed with this knowledge, you can navigate the world of vacuum flanges with confidence, ensuring your vacuum systems operate at peak efficiency.
